Late Night Secrets

It’s dark in Connor’s room. I’m snuggled up against Connor on his bed, and I’m thinking about the Case of the Fire Alarm.

Here is what I know about Zack:

He had mud on his shoes.

A teacher sent him to the bathroom because he had paint on his hand.

He is too short to pull the fire alarm.

Here is what I know about Michael:

He had mud on his shoes.

He had paint on his hands, but he washed it off.

His class was outside when the alarm was pulled, but he came inside to use the bathroom.

He did not have a bathroom pass.

He pulled the fire alarm at his old school.

Here is what I know about Jillian:

She did not have mud on her shoes.

She had paint on her hand.

She was seen coming out of the art room.

Jillian says she wasn’t in the art room, but that is a lie.

Wherever Jillian was, she had permission to leave her class.

Jillian was Kayla’s friend, and she would NEVER, EVER, EVER pull a fire alarm.

I don’t think the mud is going to help me solve this case. Lots of people have mud on their shoes. That mud could have been left by anyone who walked down that hallway.

The paint isn’t going to help me, either. Lots of kids were painting this morning.

So what do I know that will help me solve this case?

I go over everything I know about Zach, Michael, and Jillian inside my head again.

Hmmm ...

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t say Jillian would never, ever, ever pull a fire alarm. I know it, but I shouldn’t say it because it’s an opinion. An opinion is when you THINK something is true, but you have no proof that it’s true.

Uh-oh.

I just thought of one more thing I know about Jillian:

When everyone was outside after the alarm went off, she told her friend, “No one saw me.”

No one saw her do what? I wonder. Pull the fire alarm?

No! She had to have been talking about something else.

I think Michael pulled the alarm. But I don’t have proof of that, either.

Hey, Michael lives at Mouse’s house. Maybe if I go over to Mouse’s house, I could find proof that Michael pulled the alarm. Maybe Mouse will even help me find proof.

That sounds like a Plan!

I carefully step over Connor and jump down from the bed. Connor rolls over, but doesn’t wake up. Out in the hallway, I pause to listen at Mom’s door. I hear snoring. Good! I continue down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out the doggy door.

“Mouse!” I call. “Hey, Mouse. Are you awake? I’m coming over!”

“YOU ARE?” Mouse says. “YAY!!!”

Except ... I’m not sure how I’m going to get there.

There used to be a secret tunnel that went from my yard, under the fence, and into the Deerbergs’ yard. But Mom and Connor found the tunnel and filled it in.

I guess I could dig a new tunnel.

I pick a different spot along the fence. I hope this place is better hidden. And I start digging.

“I THOUGHT YOU WERE COMING OVER NOW,” Mouse says after a little while.
